III. Three Other Information-Intensive Sectors


In order to gain further insight into the relative importance of the various PageRanks, the DLL obtained PageRank data for the Home Pages of prominent organizations in three other information-intensive sectors: information technology (broadly defined), media (broadly defined) and governance, i.e., government and policy/politics.

A. Information Technology Sector

The PageRanks for vendors of computer hardware, software, networks, and Internet standards organizations are shown in Table A (below):

  • The DLL found three organizations -- Apple, Google, and the W3C -- that received Google's highest PageRank = 10

  • The other IT powerhouses -- IBM, Microsoft, Cisco, Intel, Sun, HP, Oracle, and Yahoo -- received PageRank = 9

  • A number of very successful IT firms received PageRanks = 7 and 8

  • The DLL only found one organization in this group -- The the New York Times -- that received the highest PageRank = 10

  • The Washington Post received PageRank = 9
    ... All other newspapers (except the Times) received PageRank = 7 or 8

  • NPR and the BBC were the only broadcast media that received PageRank = 9
    ... All other broadcast media received PageRank = 8

  • CNN was the only cable operation that received PageRank = 9
    ... All other cable operations received PageRank = 7 or 8

  • Only two organizations -- the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation received the highest PageRank = 10

  • The House (9) and Senate (9) outranked the Supreme Court (8) and the White House (7).

  • DARPA (9) -- a component of the Department of Defense -- outranked the DoD itself (7).

  • Only four policy/politics groups -- the NAACP, MoveOn.org, Electronic Frontier, and the NEA -- received PageRank = 8
