III. References Received by All from All

A. Data

When the reader clicks the following button, Table AA appears in a pop-up window. This table contains the the number of references that the Combined Gateway Search returned when it was asked to search for references to the name of each HBCU or service organization.

  • The first column (from the left) contains the official name of each HBCU or service organization.

  • The second column the actual name that was used in the search.

  • The third column contains the name of the domain of the HBCU or service organization.

  • The fourth column contains the number of references to the name that was returned by the search.

Ideally, each name would have been searched by placing the following command into the search box:

"NAME" -inurl:Domain Name

Unfortunately, this straight-forward approach would have underestimated the number of references in many cases:

  • Some "universities" were "colleges" until recently. Hence a search for "ABC University" will miss all the Web pages that still refer to "ABC College". In such cases it would be better to search for ("ABC University") OR ("ABC College")

  • People often refer to the short versions of some names. Hence a search for "ABC State University" might miss references to "ABC State".

  • Some names have well-known abbreviations. Hence a search for "Florida A&M University" would miss "FAMU". In this case, it would be better to search for ("Florida A&M University") OR ("FAMU")

In order to accommodate such variations, a search string containing short forms, abbreviations, and wild card characters was employed wherever appropriate. These special strings appear in the second column. If nothing appears in that column, it means that the formal name of the HBCU or service organization was used.

The table AA contains 109 rows, one for each of the 104 HBCUs, plus one for each of the five HBCU service organizations. The HBCUs appear first, in alphabetical order; the five service organizations are found at the bottom of the table. (Note: Selma University does not have a Website)

B. Comments

  • The number of references received ranged from 9 to 510.
  • No HBCU or service organization received zero references.
