In time for the heart of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season, the UVI Center for Marine and Environmental Studies introduces a new local weather reporting system. VI Mesonet is a network of automated weather stations designed to monitor environmental data. The installation and activation of five weather stations with sensors complete the project, which was conducted by the UVI Center for Marine and Environmental Studies on behalf of the Caribbean Regional Association (CaRA).

The first of its kind in the nation, a Professional Science Master’s Degree in quantitative fisheries and resource economics will be offered at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore this fall. Funded by a $699,998 grant from the National Science Foundation, the innovative program is designed to address projected shortages in the number of scientists working in fisheries stock assessment in the U.S. over the next decade.

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) has expanded its technology resources through web-based upgrades worth more than $1 million with CampusEAI Consortium. The expansion allows the University to expand its intranet capabilities through myCampus software, which creates a campus portal and web content management system for higher education institutions.

n associate professor of molecular biology at South Carolina State University is on the front lines of research that could possibly help in the effort to clean up oil spills such as the disastrous one now plaguing the Gulf Coast. Dr. Waltena Simpson is part of a bioremediation study for which she was awarded $300,000 by the university's 1890 Research & Extension Program to conduct. Simpson is working on the study in collaboration with the Savannah River National Laboratory in Aiken.

Savannah State University (SSU) continues to be a major economic engine in the state, pumping $136 million into the Savannah metropolitan economy during Fiscal Year 2009, according to a study conducted by the Selig Center for Economic Growth in the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business.

Lincoln University Associate Professor of Research, Dr. Hwei-Yiing Johnson, was recently awarded a $40,000 grant from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The mission of the Energy Conservation Award for Faculty grant is to promote energy conservation among students, administration and the community. The Thurgood Marshall College Fund awarded just two $40,000 grants after a rigorous application process over the course of the 2009-2010 academic year.

The two Washington institutions will form the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS. As part of the GHUCCTS, researchers will collaborate with MedStar Health/MedStar Health Research Institute. in Hyattsville, Md., Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and the Washington DC Veteran's Affairs Medical Center to form one of the nation’s largest biomedical and clinical research networks.

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded several grants to KSU personnel. University of the Virgin Islands Trustee S. Donald Sussman has donated $1 million toward the construction of a new science building on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. UVI President Hall said Mr. Sussman’s donation is the largest single gift the University has received during his presidency.
