NAFEO champions the interests
of HBCUs through the executive, legislative, regulatory and judicial
branches of federal and state governments. ( Note: "NAFEO
Institutions" includes all of the officially designated
HBCUs plus other predominantly Black
colleges and universities.)
The Tom Joyner Foundation only does one thing it
helps students continue their education at Black colleges. All too
often a student will get into college, then encounter financial
difficulties that will force them to drop out. The Foundation provides
money directly to the Historical Black Colleges and universities
(HBCUs) for the purpose of helping these students complete their
education.
The
Fund was established in 1987 to carry on Justice Marshall's
legacy of equal access to higher education by supporting exceptional
merit scholars attending America's public Historically
Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Today, 47 schools are
members of the TMCF, including many of the nation's largest and
most prestigious institutions of higher education. (Note:
the Fund recently changed its name from the "Thurgood Marshall
Scholarship Fund".)
The UNCF provides financial assistance to students,
raises operating funds, and increases access to technology for students
and faculty at 39 private HBCUs.
Note: UNCF also administers the Gates
Millenium Scholars (GMS) program established by the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation.
With a portfolio of more than $90 million in federal
programs, the mission of UNCFSP is to organize and deliver
educational support services such as capacity building,
technical assistance and workforce development programs to Minority
Serving Institutions (MSIs) of higher education. Federal agencies
including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National
Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Library of Medicine,
Corporation for National and Community Service, U.S. Agency for
International Development, and U.S. Departments of Education,
Defense, Energy and Interior have funded programs that are spread
over four continents and in more than 37 countries. These programs
address education and research infrastructure; public and community
health; international affairs and development; civic engagement
and community service; policy analysis; and science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics competency.
