Update of Fall 2008 Directory
to Fall 2009 Directory Now In Progress

HBCU Programs for Nontraditional Students
All HBCUs = 104; Non-traditional Programs = 51; Percent = 49

Traditional students at institutions of higher education usually attend daytime classes on weekdays, are enrolled in degree programs, and are 18 to 24 years old. By contrast, nontraditional students are typically older than traditional students, and their job and family obligations require that they to attend evening and weekend classes and/or enroll in courses offered via distance learning.

Note #1: See the DLL's Distance Learning Directory for detailed information about HBCU programs online.
Note #2: See additional comments about this Directory at the bottom of the table.

Comments ... back to top

1. The table identifies three access features that provide greater opportunities for nontraditional students to enroll in postsecondary education programs ==> evening & weekend face-to-face classes, distance learning, and satellite campuses. Satellite campuses reduce the commuting time for non-traditional students to attend evening/weekend classes. Financial aid, arguably the most important enabler for nontraditional students, will be added sometime in the future.

2. Programs for nontraditional students are completed via courses that are fully accessible to nontraditional students. Therefore the table only identifies degree programs that enable nontraditional students to complete all courses by some combination of evening/weekend and online courses.

  • The clearest indicator that a program meets these specifications is the existence of a Home Page for nontraditional students on the HBCU's Website.
  • Ideally this page will explicitly state (a) that the courses linked to the page will be offered on evenings and weekends and/or via distance learning; and (b) that the linked courses will satisfy all of requirements for the specified degrees. If some, but not all required credit courses cannot be taken by non-traditioal students, then "Credit Courses" are indicated, but no degrees are indicated.

In summary, Websites that provided prospective nontraditional students with explicit guarantees that they wouldn't be "stranded" in the middle of the program were included in the table. Websites that didn't provide such explicit guarantees were not listed.

(Note: The table also includes programs whose course schedules/ show that all courses are offered on evenings and weekends and/or online -- regardless of whether the Website contains a Home Page for "Continuing Education", "Adult Education", "Lifelong Learning", etc, etc, etc).
